Day 6

Hunwick's Camp to Margherita Camp

Pass down to Lake Kitandara, climb Scott Elliott's Pass, and continue up the ridge to Margherita Camp at about 4,485m. This is the summit staging point, sheltered among huge rocks and tied closely to the early history of Rwenzori exploration.

  • Lake Kitandara scenery
  • Scott Elliott's Pass
  • Overnight: Margherita Camp
Margherita Peak summit terrain at 5109 metres
Day 7

Margherita Peak Summit and Return to Hunwick's

Wake around 2:00am for the summit attempt. Margherita Peak is technical, with glacier and rope sections that require guide instruction, safety discipline and a firm turnaround time. If conditions are not suitable, the guide may recommend a safer glacier viewpoint instead.

  • Technical equipment and trained mountain guides required
  • Overnight: Hunwick's Camp

Day 8

Hunwick's Camp to Kiharo Camp

Day 9

Kiharo Camp to Kilembe, then Kibale Area

Descend through the Nyamwamba Valley, one of the most beautiful forest sections of the route, with moss-covered rocks, river crossings, waterfalls, birds and primates. After reaching the trailhead, continue by road toward Fort Portal or the Kibale area for a softer lodge evening.

  • About 12.2km to the park gate, plus 2.8km to Trekkers
  • Early start recommended after the long trek
  • Overnight: Fort Portal / Kibale area

Day 10

Kibale Chimpanzee Tracking and Bigodi

After the mountain, Kibale gives the itinerary a different kind of wilderness. Later, add Bigodi wetland or a community walk if energy allows.

  • Chimpanzee tracking permit included in quotation
  • Possible sightings of red-tailed, blue and colobus monkeys
  • Overnight: Kibale / Fort Portal lodge
